Theoretical Postdoctoral Research in Statistical Mechanics of Disordered Systems applied to Photonics

at the Institute for Chemical-Physical Processes (IPCF) and Institute for Complex Systems (ISC), Italian National Research Council (CNR).

Deadline: Open Until Filled

Job Description

The Institute for Chemical-Physical Processes, in collaboration with the Institute for Complex Systems, at Rome "Sapienza" University has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (3 years) to undertake statistical physics theoretical work, computational modeling and simulation activities related to photonic systems in presence of disorder and granularity.  We are looking for a motivated individual who has the ability and desire to pursue solutions to challenging, interdisciplinary problems in a stimulating and creative research environment.

The research activity will be developed in the framework of the project "Statistical mechanics of disordered granular laser systems: theory and experiments", financed for the years 2010-2013 by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) within  the Fundamental Research Investment Funds (FIRB). Principal Investigator of the project is Luca Leuzzi (IPCF) and the main investigators of the research team are Claudio Conti (ISC) and Andrea Puglisi (ISC).

The position is located at the Department of Physics of the University "Sapienza" of Rome, Italy. Gross salary will be 30000 per year (corresponding to a net salary around 1750euros per month per 12 months).

The following requirements will be considered for the position:

- A recent Ph.D. degree in one of the following - or closely related - fields:
       theoretical physics and statistical mechanics;
       computational condensed-matter physics;
       computational photonics.

- Very strong experience in at least one of these fields:
1.) Statistical mechanics of disordered and amorphous systems (replica theory, cavity method, graph theory, mode-coupling theory, stochastic dynamics);
2.) granular systems (random packing of spheres, slow compaction, fluidization under shaking);
3.) numerical simulations of complex systems (Monte Carlo algorithms, event driven molecular dynamics);
4.) Computational photonics (FDTD, beam propagation). - Proficiency with programming languages, preferably C or C++,  and/or symbolic computing languages (e.g., Mathematica) and experience in large computing facilities.

- Ability and interest in interacting with experimentalists and theorists in a team environment for problem solving.

- Excellent oral and written communication skills.

This position requires good communication skills via scientific publications and technical presentations as well as good interpersonal skills necessary for a multi-disciplinary team research environment. There will be ample opportunities for collaboration between theorists and experimentalists in the reasearch team.

The position will be available from January 2011.

APPLICATIONS
Applicants should submit a letter of application explicitly addressing the qualifications for this position and date of availability; detailed curriculum vitae; and the names, email, and addresses for three professional references to:
